Ok, forgive us a little levity here, but we saw this in a recent Huffington Post article and just had to share. A Chinese company has invented what they say is a great new way to prevent rape and potential sexual attack – hair stockings. @HappyZhangJiang of the popular Chinese blogging site Sina Weibo calls the stockings “super sexy, summertime, anti-pervert, full-leg-of-hair-stockings.” The idea behind them is that the stockings are so, well, unattractive that they will discourage any would-be sexual predators from making a move. Now, we certainly don’t mean to make light of a serious subject; there is no doubt that sexual crimes are nothing less than heinous both for victims and also for those wrongly accused. We’re just not convinced that these stockings are going to be the catalyst for change. For one thing, if they become a popular item or continue going viral on the web, everyone’s going to know they are not real anyway.
Perhaps a better idea is the anti-rape lingerie invented by three Indian engineering students. The underwear stays hidden but is wired to an alarm system that is activated if a woman is touched by a sexual predator. The system emits up to 82 electrical shocks to stop the predator before sending a warning signal, along with GPS coordinates, to the woman’s family and friends. We applaud the thought behind the Chinese invention, but we think maybe, in this case, India has the better solution for dealing with a truly grave matter.
